• Pretty in Plaid

How to paint this pretty plaid platter

You can use this design with a combination of any 3 colors, but it works best with light to medium tones. It is so much easier than it looks!

{1} Slightly dampen your platter with a wet sponge or brush. This will make it easier to smooth out your stripes as you paint them. You can also mark of horizontal and vertical lines with a water-based marker to use as a guide.

{2} Start with your first color (we used our pink #17) and paint several horizontal stripes. The stripes can be different widths and can be spaced however you like. Use long, smooth brush strokes to keep your stripes looking smooth and not choppy. Paint only 1 or 2 coats for each stripe.

{3} Paint horizontal stripes in your second color (we used green #44). Again, use long, smooth brush strokes and apply only 1 or 2 coats. Leave some white space to paint stripes your next set of stripes.

{4} Repeat with your third color (we used orange #10).

{5} Rotate your platter and repeat steps 2 through 4 to create the criss-cross pattern of a plaid. Remember, you want to see where the stripes overlap, since this is what makes it look plaid and not striped or checked. Paint only 1 coat (or 2 thin coats) on each stripe so they remain transparent.

Next week we're heading up to St Charles in Greenville for their annual First Communion plate-painting event, and soon after that the parishes of St. Thomas, Holy Spirit, and St Patrick.
